Today most computer viruses are spread through the Internet and email as opposed to media such as floppy disks. If your computer is not connected to the Internet then there is little chance that you will be infected. If you computer is connected to the Internet, especially if you have a high-speed connection such as DSL or Cable you must use some type of anti-virus software.

Fortunately, there are many options available, including some that are free of charge for home use. Update: As of 2-25-09 I no longer recommend any of the free Anti-Virus programs. There are too many new and highly infectious Trojans and Malware that are not blocked by the free software.
